The State Research Navigation-Hydrographic Institute is a leading research and scientific institution, responsible for scientific rationale and development of technical policy in the navigation sphere, hydrography, marine mapping, oceanographic provision of state economy and defense.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Institute major fields of activities lie in providing both scientific and technical support of Research and Development works (R&D), aiming at development of methods and means of navigation and oceanography, conducting complex marine exploration and engineering research; legislative and regulatory documents development in the maritime activities sphere; and also navigation system design to equip water areas and vessel paths.
ARCTIC COMPETENCE
One of the top The State Research Navigation-Hydrographic Institute projects is expeditions to justify the external boarder of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Ocean, conducted on board NES Academik Fedorov led by a nuclear-powered icebreaker. During expeditions in 2010, 2011, 2014, 2019 and 2020 a unique research, such as survey of the sea bottom topography by a multibeam eco sounder with a volume of more than 45 000 km was conducted; the research also included hydrological and gravimetric works, seismic survey as well as acoustic profiling. The research results formed the basis for the Russian Federation submission to the UN on the limits of the continental shelf.
